Should You Refinish or Replace Your Deck?

When homeowners look at a weathered deck with peeling stain, fading color, and years of exposure to the Pacific Northwest elements, replacement often seems like the only option.

The reality is that many decks still have plenty of life left in them.

Recently, our team completed a deck refinishing project that transformed a worn outdoor space into a beautiful, refreshed gathering area without the cost of a full rebuild.

The Condition

This deck had experienced years of weather exposure, resulting in:

  • Worn and deteriorated stain

  • Faded appearance

  • Surface discoloration

  • Minor areas of deterioration requiring repair

  • A general loss of curb appeal

While the deck looked tired, the underlying structure remained in good condition, making refinishing a practical and cost-effective solution.

1. Cleaning and Surface Preparation

Proper preparation is the most important part of any refinishing project.

The deck was thoroughly cleaned and pressure washed to remove dirt, mildew, debris, and failing finish. This process helps create a clean surface for stain adhesion and allows the condition of the wood to be properly evaluated.

2. Repairs

Before refinishing, we completed several repairs including:

  • Securing the railing top cap

  • Sanding rough and weathered areas

  • Replacing rotten cedar beneath a section of the railing

Addressing these issues before staining helps improve both appearance and longevity.

3. Staining and Protection

Once the deck was clean, dry, and repaired, we applied a fresh coat of premium exterior stain and sealer.

For this project, a semi-solid oil-based waterproofing stain was selected to enhance the natural beauty of the wood while providing protection against moisture, UV exposure, and everyday wear.

The Results

The finished deck showcases the natural grain and character of the wood while providing a rich, refreshed appearance.

Beyond aesthetics, refinishing helps:

  • Protect wood from moisture damage

  • Reduce weather-related deterioration

  • Extend the lifespan of the deck

  • Improve curb appeal

  • Create a more enjoyable outdoor living space

Is Your Deck a Candidate for Refinishing?

Refinishing may be a good option if:

✔ The framing and structure are still sound

✔ The deck surface is weathered but not severely damaged

✔ You have peeling stain or faded wood

✔ Minor repairs are needed but widespread replacement is not

✔ You want to improve appearance without the cost of rebuilding

A professional evaluation can help determine whether refinishing or replacement is the better investment.

Thinking About Your Deck?

Summer is one of the best times to address deck maintenance and restoration. A properly refinished deck not only looks great but can help protect your investment for years to come.

If your deck is showing signs of wear, our team would be happy to assess its condition and discuss the best options for your home.
